Sack Trick

SACK TRICK

You might be wondering what the hell is Sack Trick, right? Well, Sack Trick is a spin off of the Skunkworks band.

It all started when Chris Dale discovered his interest in songwriting when he was still playing with Skunkworks. He collaborated on the writing of “Innerspace” with Bruce Dickinson and Alex Dickson. However, Chris was only encouraged to go on when Bruce listened to some of his stuff. “I write a lot of silly songs from things going on in my head. As far are lyrics and music are concerned, they are never very serious” said Chris. Among other things, Chris wrote two tracks “Americans are behind” and “I’m in a band with an Italian drummer”, which are a hint of what Sack Trick would become. Those songs are available on the “Back from the edge” B-sides.

So, after Skunkworks’ split, Chris entirely devoted himself to his long-term project : Sack Trick, so to speak to record his own album with talented musicians. Originally the Sack Trick line-up was : Chris Dale, Alessandro “Sponder” Elena and Alex Dickson (all 3 from the Skunkworks band), plus the following: Doogie White (Rainbow), Pete Friesen (Almighty, Alice Cooper), Robin Guy (Faith No More, Rachel Stamp), Jeff Proteus (Steel), Jem Davis(UFO, FM). But it can turn out to be totally different each week and they rather like this idea.

At the end of 1997, Sack Trick’s first album “(Music From) The Mystery Rabbits” was released. The difficulty to gather all the musicians on this album generated a whole year of hard work. All the tracks were written by Chris Dale, and Alex Dickson put an end to it producing and mixing it in his home-studio. Not wishing to work with a record company, Chris had to find a distribution label to release the album. That’s how ORG Records dealt with the distribution of “(Music From) The Mystery Rabbits”.

Sack Trick have been touring a lot all over the UK since the first album came out. But that wasn’t to end up there…. Therfore, they started working on their second album “Penguins on the Moon”, a concept about intrepid penguins who decide to travel to the moon. The album is presented as a cartoon describing the diverse unexpected events and misfortunes of these kind-hearted penguins. The album was finally released on August 28th 2000. It was co-written by Chris Dale and Alex Dickson, who also recorded and produced it.

Numerous musicians have collaborated with Chris Dale on this new album. You can even find the musicians who played on the previous one on this masterpiece… But also other musicians like Chris Nubile (The Nubiles), David Ryder-Prangley (Rachel Stamp), Chris Sharrock (The LA’S, World Party, Robbie Williams), Jef Streatfield (The Whildhearts), Tom Lown and last but not least, BRUCE DICKINSON.

In the summer of 2002 Bruce Dickinson decided to get together with Chris Dale and Alex Dickson again for a few festivals in Europe. Bruce wanted a more metal approach, hence the need for a second guitar player, Pete Friesen (ex Alice Cooper) and a new drummer Robin Guy (ex Rachel Stamp). Both are also members of Sack Trick.

In 2004 Sack Trick finally released their so much expected third studio album: a Kiss cover album called “Sheep in Kiss Make-up” featuring Bruce Dickinson, Doogie White (ex Rainbow, Yngwiee Malmsteen), Pete Friesen (Alice Cooper), Alex Kane (AntiProduct), Robin Guy (Rachel Stamp), Ace (Skunk Anansie) and many others…
